Children's Parade - Star Of The Show!

It has been an incredibly memorable and joyful week for our school community, and I would like to begin by thanking all of the families, children and staff who took part in the Children’s Parade. What an amazing experience it was! Our incredible Ogre was adored by so many people along the route, attracting smiles, cheers and lots of excitement from the crowd. We were especially proud to hear that Mikey Please, the author of the book that inspired our creation, said that “it was the ogre’s best day of his life”! He couldn't stop posting about us on his Instagram (see photos below). The collaboration and happy atmosphere created by our team of families and children made this a really special day and we are exceptionally grateful to the wonderful team of parents who worked on the build and helped us with transporting him. He'll come to live in our school library and we hope to be able to show him off to you in Arts Week! One of the organisers of the Parade took the time to email us this week to say "I just wanted to say I was blown away with your ogre and makes- your section  looked amazing  and its been fabulous  seeing all the photos of him- he certainly made an impact! Well done on all your hard work!" Our section truly was the star of the show. It was a wonderful celebration of creativity, community spirit and teamwork. Now to plan for next year!

    Disability Awareness

On Friday, children in Years 4, 5 and 6 took part in a truly inspirational session with disability activist Jadey. Through honest discussion, humour and personal stories, Jadey encouraged children to think deeply about kindness, inclusion and acceptance of others. The children listened respectfully and were curious about the many challenges he has overcome and the resilience and determination he has shown throughout his life. His message reflected our CAW Qualities perfectly, particularly resilience, respect and aspiration, and the children gained so much from the experience.

    Year 2 Assessment Week

I would also like to say a huge well done to our Year 2 children, who approached their SATs week with exceptional maturity and positivity. Each morning, children enjoyed a special breakfast and play session put on by their teachers before completing their papers, helping them to feel calm, confident and ready to do their best. In the afternoons, they enjoyed making pizzas as part of their DT unit, providing a lovely balance to the week. We were incredibly proud of the attitude to learning shown by all of the children, who demonstrated excellent effort and resilience throughout. They even managed to get some extra maths practice in out on the playground!

    Year 6 Assessments

Next week, it is Year 6’s turn as they begin their SATs assessments. Attendance for Year 6 next week is exceptionally important so that children are able to fully access each paper and feel settled within the routine of the week. The Eagles and Falcons have shown tremendous effort, resilience and aspiration over the year and have been producing personal bests every week. We are so proud of how children have approached these final weeks in the run up to the assessments and only ask that they bring this positive attitude into the real papers next week. SATs are a useful tool for measuring progress and helping secondary schools understand how best to support children as they transition in September, but they remain only one part of the many, many things we know and value about every Year 6 child. We are incredibly proud of them already and cannot wait to see all the exciting things they will enjoy after SATs, including beginning work on their end-of-year assembly and show.

    Sports Week

Looking ahead, Sports Week is also fast approaching, and we are very excited for another fantastic whole-school event. There will be a wide range of activities taking place throughout the week, giving children opportunities to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and celebrate healthy, active lifestyles. Please make sure to check the dates and information shared in our weekly bulletin so that children come prepared and ready to take part.

    TTRS Winners!

Finally, a huge congratulations to Year 5 Herons, who were winners in this year’s city-wide Times Tables Rock Stars competition. Across Brighton & Hove, an incredible 2,924 pupils from 200 classes in 31 schools took part, making this a fantastic achievement. We are delighted that Herons were named the Deans Partnership Winning Class and have won £100 for the school to celebrate their success. This is a brilliant reflection of the children’s effort, fluency and enthusiasm for maths, and we are incredibly proud of their achievement. Well done, Herons!
